GOVERNANCE AND CIVIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME

(GCEP)

YPD Programme

Objectives of the Programme

    • 1. To enhance public participation of the people in governance
    • 2. To advance promotion of equity and justice in society
    • 3. To secure human rights in the communit


    • Description of the Programme


      The programme aims at enhancing the legal and policy environment in Kenya. The interventions are aimed at citizen’s participation in governance and public affairs. The programme also aims at creating an enabling enabling environment for better utilization of public resources, promoting Gender equality, campaign for the MDGs and provision of legal aid advisory services. The programme also focuses on human rights, civic education,
      electoral processes and governance matters.

      Activities


      1. Create awareness on the devolution process
      a) Organize training on devolution
      b) Road shows on better governance
      c) Conduct workshops on the current legislation and the
      constitution
      2. Undertake the lobbying and advocacy on legal and policy
      reforms
      a) Propose amendment to current legislation.
      b) Develop and submit memorandum of understanding (MOU),
      petitions, etc
      c) Advocate for formation of citizens forums.
      d) Ensure public participation in public affairs.
      e) Ensure citizens representation in governance.
      f) Ensure compliance to gender equity, interest groups.
      g) Campaign and monitor implementation of MDGs.
      3. To inform monitor human rights violations
      a) Conduct community outreaches on forms of rights violation.
      b) Train human rights defenders, paralegals and community
      resource persons.
      c) Report and support cases of human rights violation.
      4. To educate the public on voting rights
      a) Conduct voter education to the citizens.
      b) Review of electoral areas.
      c) Monitor and campaign elections to ensure legal provisions are
      compiled.
      5. Establish the Legal Aid Clinic
      a) Advise the public on Human Rights.b) Inform the public on democracy and rule of law
      c) Advice citizens on court judicial process.
      d) Guidance on the court process.
      e) Provide information on land, issues, matrimonial cases gender
      rights, labor laws, employment laws, inheritance and property
      ownership and children rights.

      Achievements of the Programme


      YPD has conducted several projects on MDGs which include:
      a) Petitions collecting over 1 million public signatures
      b) Participation of youth in over 20 forums.
      c) Survey on MDGs covering Kiambu County with support of Action Aid Kenya (AAK) in 2007.
      d) Participated at a National music extravaganza on MDGs and poverty
      eradication.
      e) Conducted 4 workshops locally on the MDGs and poverty.
      f) Participated at a medical camp organized nationally to achieve
      MDGs.
      g) Organized over 3 rallies on the campaign for MDGs.
      h) Participated at Inter-country regional assessment of MDGs in East
      Africa.
      i) Organized a schools forum at Machakos on the MDGs/Poverty
      campaigns

      On Governance we have done the following:


      a) 2 Peace-Building and reconciliation workshops in Machakos and
      Makueni supported by Peace-Net Kenya.
      b) Civic education workshops on devolution funded URAIA trust
      covering Lower Eastern region in 38 districts. Trained 38 district
      coordinators on the civic education on the new Constitution 2009.

      On Governance we have done the following:

      1. 1. Organized two (2) Peace-Building and reconciliation workshops in Machakos and Makueni supported by Peace-Net Kenya in 2009.
      2. 2. Civic education workshops on devolution funded URAIA trust covering Lower Eastern region in 38 districts. Trained 38 district coordinators on the civic education on the new Constitution 2010.
      3. 3. Formed Machakos Local Urban Forum (M-LUF) a network of 150 CSOs to promote governance with support from Civil Society Urban Development Programme (CSUDP) a project of Embassy of Sweden. 
      4. 4. Conducted research on delivery on rights based approach on delivery of health services in Makueni County with support of Transparency International (TI) in 2014.
      5. 5. Campaigned for MDGs with support of UNMC from 2005 to 2010.
      6. 6. Participation at the International day for eradication of poverty October 17th 2005-2013 covering petitions, awareness through workshops, processions, demonstrations, research, outreaches, road shows.
      7. 7. Monitoring human rights violations with support from NCHRDK in 2013-2015.
      8. 8. Conducted several citizens’ participation and budget forums with support of Hakijamii in 2013-2015.
      9. 9. Attended and conducted several peace building and conflict management workshops and meeting in Machakos County in 2017.
